Back Street #1
When we started we began by building a fortified pig compound on a bit of spare land round the back of one of our houses, Cleveland House in Back Street. We put in a good deal of effort in planning and actually constructing the fencing and the house and were pretty pleased with our efforts. Now anyone who knows anything about Pigs will know they are great ones to prick any egos and over confidence and over the course of time they have indeed managed to find various weaknesses. We've had one or two minor escapes but luckily no great break outs!
To begin with we have deliberately tried to keep our responsibilities as manageable as possible as all four of the principal pig keepers work full time doing other things either around the house or other locations but as we have progressed to actually breeding from our lovely Berkshire ladies, Gladys and Mabel, we have had a population explosion growing from 2 to 18 pigs literally overnight!
Back Street #2
We have had to expand into the bit of scrag land at the back of Paul + Alison's garden and what a perfect place for little pigglies! For such a relatively small area there are loads of undulations and interesting features to keep piglies happy for hours rooting around for any last speck of food that might still be lurking. We have a good range of natural barriers and sturdy fencing that we either in place or that Paul has refurbished and we have also made great use of electrical fencing to give us flexibility of placing them around the land and also for protecting some of the bushes. And as for the sleeping accommodation, it is the very epitome of piggy luxury!
So now we are not only Ashton Keynes Pigs, but also well and truly
The BACK STREET PIGS!
